What P0171 means
Fuel trims have added so much fuel trying to correct a lean mixture that the PCM sets P0171.
Why the check engine light comes on
A lean mixture can cause misfires, hot combustion, and catalyst stress. The PCM turns the light on when adaptive fuel control hits its limit.
