Car idles rough — what to check before replacing parts
A rough idle is the engine stumbling, shaking, or hunting for RPM when you are stopped. The check engine light may or may not be on. Do not start with spark plugs or a “throttle body clean” until you know whether the ECU is seeing a misfire, a lean condition, or an idle-control fault.

Scan first — the code tells you which system
Plug in an ELM327, open MotorBit, and read stored, pending, and permanent codes. Typical companions to a rough idle:
- P0300 random misfire — the engine is skipping combustion on more than one cylinder.
- P0301–P0304 (or higher) — a single-cylinder misfire. That cylinder’s plug, coil, injector, or compression is the short list.
- P0171 / P0174 — system too lean. Unmetered air or weak fueling, not “a bad O2 sensor” by default.
- P0506 / P0507 — idle RPM too low or too high. Look at vacuum leaks and the idle air path.
If there is a stored code, open freeze frame. Idle problems that set at 700 RPM and 15% load are a different job than a misfire that set at 2800 RPM on a hill.
Live data to watch at idle (in Park / Neutral)
- RPM — is it stable, or hunting 200+ RPM?
- Engine load and throttle position — at idle, throttle should be near closed. A high reading with your foot off the pedal is a clue.
- STFT and LTFT — both banks positive (adding fuel) at idle often means a vacuum leak that becomes less obvious at cruise.
- MAF g/s — a 2.0L at hot idle is often in a low single-digit range. Wildly low or high vs similar cars is a reason to inspect the intake path, not to replace the catalytic converter.
- Coolant temperature — a stuck-cold reading keeps the mixture rich and idle unstable.
What a rough idle is usually not
A catalytic converter does not typically make a cold idle shake by itself. P0420 is an efficiency code; it is a result more often than a cause. If the car shakes and you also have misfire counts, fix the misfire first — unburned fuel is how converters actually die.
