P0300: Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected

The engine is misfiring across more than one cylinder. This is one of the most common reasons a check engine light flashes.

What P0300 means

P0300 means the powertrain control module (PCM) detected misfires that are not isolated to a single cylinder. Unburned fuel is leaving the combustion chamber, which can overheat the catalytic converter.

Why the check engine light comes on

The check engine light comes on because misfires increase emissions and can quickly damage the catalytic converter. If the light is flashing, the misfire is severe enough that you should reduce load and diagnose immediately.

Common causes

• Worn or fouled spark plugs
• Failing ignition coils or plug wires
• Vacuum leak or intake gasket leak
• Dirty or failing fuel injectors
• Low fuel pressure
• Incorrect ignition timing or cam/crank correlation
• Carbon buildup or low compression

• Loss of power under acceleration
• Fuel smell or worse fuel economy
