How to connect an OBD2 adapter to iPhone
iPhone will not talk to every cheap Bluetooth dongle that works on Android. You need an ELM327-compatible adapter that speaks Bluetooth LE or is an MFi accessory, the 16-pin port, and ignition on. MotorBit handles the scan — the adapter is only the radio.
You do not pair most BLE adapters in iOS Settings. Open MotorBit and let the app find the device. Pairing in Settings first is a common reason “it is connected but the app sees nothing.”
What you need
- A 16-pin OBD2 port (driver’s side under the dash on almost every car since the mid-1990s)
- An ELM327 BLE or MFi adapter that seats firmly
- MotorBit installed from the App Store
- Ignition ON — engine running is better if you want live data
Steps
- Engine off. Plug the adapter in until it does not wobble. A loose dongle drops the bus and looks like a “software bug.”
- Turn ignition to ON (dash lights on). For live PIDs, start the engine.
- Open MotorBit. Allow Bluetooth if iOS asks.
- Scan for adapters in the app. Select yours. Wait for the AT/init sequence to finish.
- Read codes first. Then open freeze frame if anything is stored. Then watch live data.
If nothing appears
Go to ELM327 not connecting to iPhone. If the adapter is a $6 clone, read fake vs real ELM327 before you blame the car.
What a first good session looks like
You should see RPM (if the engine is running), a code list that may be empty, and PIDs such as coolant temp. Empty codes with a healthy idle is normal. A flashing light plus P0300 is not — reduce load and diagnose.
