Fake vs real ELM327 adapters — what iPhone users should buy

ELM327 is a protocol interpreter. The original chip and licensed firmware are not what you get in a $6 listing titled “ELM327 v2.1 Super Mini.” Those clones copy the AT command surface poorly. On Android they sometimes limp along. On iPhone they often never complete initialization.

Warning signs on the listing

• “Works with all OBD apps” and a photo of an Android-only screen
• No mention of Bluetooth LE, BLE, or MFi — only “Bluetooth”
• Version numbers used as marketing (v1.5, v2.1) with no manufacturer
• Claims of manufacturer-enhanced codes for every brand. Generic OBD2 is the honest baseline.
