ELM327 not connecting to iPhone — fixes that actually work

Most “MotorBit won’t connect” reports are the adapter, the port, or iOS pairing — not the car’s ECU. Work the list in order. It is faster than buying a second app.

1. The dongle is the wrong kind of Bluetooth

Classic Bluetooth SPP (the kind Android pairs in Settings as a phone) is unreliable or impossible on iOS. You want Bluetooth LE, or an MFi-certified cable/dongle. If the box only says “works with Torque on Android,” assume it will fail on iPhone until proven otherwise. See what ELM327 is.

2. You paired it in iOS Settings

For many BLE adapters, pairing in Settings steals the connection. Forget the device in Settings → Bluetooth, then connect only from MotorBit.

3. Ignition is off, or the plug is loose

The adapter needs power from the port. Key off = dead dongle. A cheap plug that sits at an angle drops CAN and looks like a random disconnect. Reseat it. Try not to hang keys on it.

4. Clone firmware

Ultra-cheap “v1.5 / v2.1” sticks often lie about voltage, drop bytes, or never finish init. If MotorBit finds the radio but cannot initialize the interpreter, try a known-good BLE/MFi adapter before you assume the ECU is silent. How to spot a fake ELM327.

5. Another app still owns Bluetooth

Force-quit other OBD apps. Toggle Bluetooth off/on. Restart the phone once if a previous session hung the radio.

6. The car really is quiet

A dead battery, a blown OBD fuse, or aftermarket radio work can kill the port. If a second known-good adapter also gets no bus, test port power (many dongles have an LED) and battery voltage.
