FREEZE FRAME
OBD2 freeze frame explained
When a diagnostic trouble code is stored, the ECU also freezes a small set of live data: engine speed, load, coolant temperature, vehicle speed, fuel status, and more. That snapshot is freeze frame.
Why it matters more than the code text
P0171 “system too lean” at idle with 20% load is a vacuum leak suspect. The same code at 80% load and 3500 RPM is more likely fuel delivery. Without freeze frame you are guessing.
What to look at first
- RPM and vehicle speed — idle vs cruise vs acceleration
- Engine load and throttle
- Coolant temperature — cold open-loop vs fully warm
- Fuel trims if present
- Whether the engine was in closed loop
How to read it in MotorBit
Connect, read codes, then open freeze frame for the stored DTC. Compare that snapshot to live data at the same conditions. If live data no longer matches, the fault may be intermittent — do not replace a catalytic converter based on a single stale P0420 without this context.
Diagnose it on the car
MotorBit reads codes, freeze frame, and live data through an ELM327 adapter on iPhone.
