Engine coolant temperature PID explained
Engine coolant temperature (PID 05) is one of the first numbers the ECU uses for warm-up fueling, idle, and fan control. If this PID is wrong, everything downstream looks wrong: rich smell, poor MPG, a hunting idle, or a cooling fan that never runs.
What “normal” looks like
- Cold start — close to outdoor temperature, not 90°C on a winter morning.
- Warm-up — a steady climb. A thermostat that never opens, or never closes, shows up here.
- Fully warm cruise — most cars settle in a band around 85–105°C (check the under-hood spec, not a generic internet number).
Stuck cold = fuel waste
P0128 means the engine did not reach the thermostat regulating temperature in time. Live data: ECT hangs in the 70s °C on the highway while you expect normal operating temp. That is a thermostat / cooling-system job and a common reason for a sudden MPG drop.
Circuit codes: P0117 low input, P0118 high input, P0125 insufficient coolant temp for closed loop.
Stuck hot vs a lying sensor
A gauge that pegs while PID 05 looks normal (or the reverse) is a cluster vs sensor disagreement. Trust the scan tool for diagnosis, then decide whether the sender, the cluster, or the actual cooling system is the fault. Overheating is a safety issue — stop and do not “clear the light” to keep driving.
