Car shakes when accelerating — misfire or something else?
A shake that appears when you press the gas is not the same as a rough idle. Under load the ECU commands more fuel and spark. If a cylinder cannot keep up, you feel it in the seat. If the converter is restricted, you feel a loss of power and heat. If the transmission is slipping, RPM rises without matching road speed.
If the check engine light is flashing, reduce load and diagnose immediately. A flashing MIL is the ECU saying unburned fuel is leaving the engine — that is how catalytic converters are destroyed.
Three patterns, three different jobs
1. Misfire under load
Codes: P0300 or a cylinder-specific P030x. Freeze frame often shows higher RPM and load, not idle. Live data: misfire counts climb when you accelerate; engine load is high; one bank’s fuel trims may look different on a V engine.
2. Exhaust restriction (converter / exhaust)
P0420 or P0430 can appear after a long misfire. Symptoms: power fades as speed rises, a sulfur smell, or an overheated converter. A P0420 alone with a smooth engine is not an automatic “replace the cat today” — confirm there is no active misfire and look at O2 switching on the oxygen sensor page.
3. Driveline / transmission
P0700 is only a pointer: the transmission module stored its own code. RPM flares on a shift, or the shake is rhythmic with road speed, is not an ignition job. Scan all modules you can; MotorBit reads generic OBD2. Manufacturer transmission codes may need a shop tool.
What to record before anyone sells you a part
- Is the light steady or flashing?
- Does it shake in one gear only, or in every gear?
- Freeze frame: RPM, speed, load, coolant temp.
- Live: misfire (if the PID is supported), fuel trims, MAF vs RPM, throttle vs load.
A coil pack that fails only when hot will look fine in a parking-lot idle test. That is why freeze frame and a short recorded drive matter more than a parts-cannon.
How MotorBit helps
Use the dashboard and charts while a passenger watches, or record a short session (Pro). You want the moment of the shake on a graph: throttle jumps, load rises, RPM stumbles. Then open the matching code page and compare.
Scan this symptom on the car
MotorBit reads codes, freeze frame, and live data through an ELM327 adapter on iPhone.
