CLEARING CODES
How to clear a check engine light the right way
Clearing the light is not a repair. It is the last step after you fixed the cause and recorded the evidence.
Do this order
- Scan and save codes + freeze frame.
- Diagnose with live data.
- Repair the actual fault.
- Clear with a scan tool (MotorBit Mode 04) or let some pending codes age out after successful trips.
- Confirm the code does not return and monitors complete.
Why pulling the battery is a bad reset
You lose radio presets, idle learn, and freeze frame. Many cars also need throttle/idle relearn. The light often returns on the next drive because the fault is still there.
Permanent codes
Permanent DTCs cannot be erased with a tool. They clear after the ECU verifies the repair. If a “permanent” code remains, the monitor has not passed yet.
Diagnose it on the car
MotorBit reads codes, freeze frame, and live data through an ELM327 adapter on iPhone.
