Check engine light came back after I cleared it

A light that returns after a clear is the ECU doing its job. Clearing is Mode 04: it erases the lamp command and the freeze-frame snapshot. It does not repair a lean condition, a misfire, or a loose gas cap. If you cleared first and the light is back, you are not starting over — you are starting with less evidence.

Do not disconnect the battery to “try again.” You lose radio presets, idle learn, and the freeze frame you need. Scan, record, then decide.

Why it comes back so fast

• Same code, same trip — the fault is current (vacuum leak, misfire, heater circuit). Pending becomes stored again as soon as the monitor fails.
• Same code, a few days later — intermittent: heat-soak coil, EVAP leak that only shows after a cold start, or a catalyst monitor that needs a specific drive.
• A different code — the first clear hid a second fault, or a repair introduced a new one (intake boot left loose after a MAF cleaning is a classic).

What to capture this time

1. Stored vs pending vs permanent — screenshot the list in MotorBit.
2. Freeze frame for every stored code: RPM, load, speed, coolant, fuel status.
3. Live PIDs that match the family: trims for lean/rich, misfire for shake, EVAP-related if it is a leak code, O2 switching for catalyst codes.

Then look up the code — P0420, P0300, P0171, P0442 are the usual return visitors — and compare freeze frame to the “what it means” page instead of buying the first part a forum names.

Permanent codes will ignore your reset

Mode 0A permanent DTCs stay until the ECU sees a passing monitor. If you “cleared” and a permanent code is still there, that is expected. Drive the cycle; do not keep hitting clear.
