OBD2 readiness monitors and emissions tests
Readiness monitors are self-tests the ECU runs. Inspection stations often require them to be complete (with limited “not ready” allowed).
Continuous monitors
Misfire, fuel system, and comprehensive component monitors run often. They usually complete quickly.
Non-continuous monitors
Catalyst, EVAP, O2 sensors, EGR, and secondary air need specific conditions: temperature, speed, idle time. A short trip to the shop may not finish EVAP.
Why clearing codes hurts inspection
Mode 04 clear resets monitors to incomplete. If you clear the light the night before a test, you can fail for “not ready” even if the repair was good.
How MotorBit helps
Read monitor status before you go to the inspection lane. Confirm catalyst and EVAP show complete after a proper drive cycle.
Diagnose it on the car
MotorBit reads codes, freeze frame, and live data through an ELM327 adapter on iPhone.
